YOUR ADVENTURE AWAITS.
Explore Unspoiled Colorado from Your Pitkin Lodging
Make Pitkin your base camp for an unforgettable exploration of Colorado's unspoiled beauty. Pitkin is an ORV-friendly town; however, please respect speed limits for safety. With ghost towns, mines, abandoned railroads, and remote mountain passes ranging from easy to challenging, there's adventure for everyone. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including Elk, Moose, Bear, Antelope, and Mule Deer. Our lodging provides convenience to maximize your time away.
Must-Visit Destinations:
- Cumberland Pass: An 18-mile easy trip for most vehicles leading to Tin Cup, an old mining camp with Frenchy's Cafe and historical sites along the way, including cemeteries, Mirror Lake, and high mountain overlooks. It's a half-day trip from your cabin.
- Taylor Reservoir: A straightforward 45-minute ride over Cumberland Pass toward Tincup, offering breathtaking valley views and potential moose sightings. Stay on UTV trails and check out the cafe and general store by the lake. The Taylor Park UTV rally in August is a must for enthusiasts.
- Fire Tower: An exhilarating ride through Quartz Creek properties to Fairview Peak and the fire tower. Access it via the Quartz Creek properties road, and be prepared for a physically demanding hike to the "top of the world" fire tower.
- The Alpine Tunnel: A half-day trip from your cabin with cliff overlooks and the terrace known as "Palisades." Enjoy the hand-cut stone and mortar wall built in 1881. The scenery is breathtaking, but be aware of occasional trail closures due to ongoing repairs.
- Mirror Lake: A trail outside Tin Cup leading to a stunning mountain lake. Prepare to spend an afternoon here, fishing, enjoying lunch, and keeping an eye out for Mountain Goats.
- Mt. Antero: A full-day ride through the Alpine tunnel area and on to St. Elmo.
- St. Elmo: Another full-day ride to one of many ghost towns accessible directly from your cabin. During the summer season, the General Store is open, offering snacks, gifts, and drinks. This ride takes you through Hancock Pass onto St. Elmo.
- Waunita Pass to Little Baldy: One of our favorite trails and overlooks. Follow the Waunita Pass road from your cabin to the top. The main trail is easy to moderate, with narrower, rockier, and more challenging branches. The top overlooks the town of Pitkin, making it a quick jaunt if you're short on time.
- Black Sage to Whitepine: An easy ride over Waunita and through the valley of the Double Heart Ranch to the charming town of Whitepine. Keep an eye out for large herds of elk in the breathtaking valley.
- Hancock Pass: A moderate 4WD trail that takes you to the Alpine Tunnel Road, covering 7 miles of rocky and steep terrain.
In addition to these options, there are numerous ORV opportunities within a short trailer drive, such as Marshall Pass, Cement Pass, Old Monarch Pass, Paradise Divide, and Gunsight Pass. Explore other nearby attractions like the Black Canyon, Blue Mesa Lake, Almont, Cottonwood Pass, Buena Vista, and Leadville.
Remember to stay on marked trails to preserve Colorado's unspoiled beauty for everyone to enjoy!
